The
U.S. Forest Service and the Brazilian Federal Institute of the Environment
and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) are working together to
assess impacts of fire and environmental change in tropical forests
and savanna. These ecosystems, which are critical to worldwide
carbon balance and conservation of nature, are subject to clearing
for agriculture, changing climate, unsustainable levels of resource
extraction, oxidant air pollution, and disturbance by fire. Although
such stresses are easily catalogued, their combined and ultimate
impacts are not known. The goals of this program are to:
-
conduct an integrated
assessment of the continental-scale impacts of fire
and fire emissions on climate, ecosystem productivity, and human
health;
-
demonstrate a means to mitigate
and manage tropical fire impacts
and establish a more natural role for fire in conservation reserves;
